day 4 was our waterfall hike ... the booking agent warned us that the waterfall experience would be best during the rain ... i suppose luck was on our side considering it had been raining all night and all morning ... when i mentioned we booked our cheaper waterfall hike through the quasi-shady agent, it kinda showed when we pulled up to the trail head next to the "official" waterfall hiking group ... they had the snooty tour guide, official clear ponchos, and official walking sticks ... what'd we have? trash bags and break-your-own walking sticks from the dense foliage all around ... leave it shirley to make her own fashionable rain wear ...
in hindsight, i actually preferred our more informal driver, cousin a (we were 'cousin b' so he wouldn't have to remember names) ... he deviated from the standard plan and took us to some local sights and gave us the local perspective on wildlife and scenery ... we ended up visiting the base and top of the waterfall/cliffs where kamehameha pushed off the opposing army to unite the hawaiian islands ... had a lengthy conversation about the wild chickens and boars ... turns out the overcast-ness didn't help our view from the top of pali lookout, but the waterfall was roaring like nobody's business ...
we hit up the waterfall from that rock movie, the rundown ... visible for a split-second from the highway, the tour guide pulled over under the condition that we play it safe ...
apparently he didn't want any mainlanders being stupid and getting hurt ... who, us? ...
we did get a few bumps and bruises swinging from the trees, but we weren't about to go swing-diving ... i didn't have my swim trunks ...
so we called it a day and broke for the beach for some more swimming ... we caught sight of a real-life boo ... and also a surfer dog ... i guess it's easy to stay on a board when you have twice as many legs ... then we booked it over to the mall to check out hawaiian fashion ... the asian tourist industry in hawaii is pretty huge ... lots of japanese tourists to the point that basically every retail and food service worker speaks japanese at the bigger mall stores ... but you can't end day w/o a little quasi-local food ... so we got the slightly upscale plate lunch at the ala moana mall's food court ... prime rib and bad-ass fried chicken w/ mac salad, mashed potatoes and corn ...
