so this was my final restaurant week outing this year ... citrus at social ... we haven't been to social hollywood in years ... but it's cathartic to return to the scene of the crime, no? let's see what they're about ...
they had an interesting cocktail menu ... mostly drinks w/ sweet syrup, but there were some interesting combinations ... valentino = basil and grapes? awesome ... cucumber, cilantro, tequila ... good too ...
appetizers ... goat cheese caesar salad ... very cheese-y ... jik got the chestnut soup w/ peanut butter and wild mushrooms ... very savory and smoke-y ... and the beet/tuna salad ... visually appealing w/ the beets and raw tuna cubes blending together ... tiny portions though ...
winner was jik w/ the soup ...
entrees - arctic char ... did you see top chef? yeah ... me too ... pair that w/ potato grits and a little bit of bacon and you've got yourself a meal ... very well-prepared ... moist, tender and a crispy skin to boot ... still, it's basically salmon w/ a fancy name ...
72 hour short rib ... very very tender and well-seasoned w/ a potato/cheese-y(?) twinkie ... i love me some red meat ...
roasted chicken ... with tater tots! ... yep ... a throw back to grade-school ... but usually one might be used to chunked potato ... these tater tots have a very fine texture that didn't agree w/ ivy because they were too oily ... hey ... a tater tot is a tater tot ...
renee won by way of volume w/ the chicken ...
dessert is the citrus' claim to fame ... creme brulee ... a custom chocolate bar which was semi-sweet ... and the mushroom vacherin ... a crisp meringue mushroom-shaped shell filled w/ chocolate ice cream w/ a pistachio and chocolate crunchies sauce ... it was definitely a sight to see ... i just wasn't expecting so much hard meringue ... not a bad dinner for a rainy thursday ...
either way, restaurant week is done for me ... let's see who came out on top in my book ... best appetizer (volume) -- espn zone -- a big bowl of artichoke and cheese ... it's hard not to be full after a bowl of cheese ... best appetizer (taste) -- valentino -- savory crepe* w/ duckling? huey, dewey, and lewey, get in my belly ... * non-crepe-biased appetizer (taste) -- vermont -- mushroom/leek tort w/ a well-done pastry crust ... best appetizer (presentation) -- gordon ramsey -- you had me at amuse bouche ... best entree (volume) -- vermont -- big chunk of fork-tender meat ... meat and (quasi-) potatoes are always filling ... best entree (taste) -- valentino -- if i knew i'd be eating baby faces, i'd feel a little more guilty about licking my lips ... best entree (presentation) -- water grill -- the swordfish was easy on the eyes ... and the tastebuds ... best dessert (volume) -- citrus at social -- a giant mushroom? i'll eat your house any day, papa smurf ... best dessert (taste) - - water grill -- oh orgasmic red velvet pudding ... i want to have your children ... best dessert (presentation) -- gordon ramsey -- not sure if i wanted to eat the chocolate cake or put in a curio cabinet ... can't have everything ... see you guys next year ... andy |
