day 3 of restaurant week ... zucca ristorante ... downtown ... zucca is part of the patina group ... they have a quasi-monopoly on the "restaurant in a public building" business ... museums, concert halls, libraries ... the last patina group outing at lacma wasn't necessarily the best ... so let's see how this outing went ...
appetizers - skate wing, beef carpaccio, and mixed cured meats ... the skate wing was ok ... i suppose psychologically, it's supposed to be exotic, but it's just fish ... renee turned out to be the winner by way of volume w/ the mixed meat plate ...
entree - pumpkin ravioli, sea bass, and rabbit ... the pumpkin ravioli was savory w/ grated parmesan - very comfort-food-y - i liked it ... the rabbit, once again, was an exotic version of chicken ... i've had rabbit before, but i can't bring myself to see it as anything special ... especially w/ all the extra tiny bones you don't expect when eating chicken ... sea bass was accompanied by a bit of cheese-y potato and was pretty tiny ... to me, it had more skin than meat ... renee was the winner again in terms of volume w/ the rabbit ...
we finished the meal w/ gelati - pistachio, pumpkin, espresso - and a sad little custard and pine nut tort ... a ton of gelato, more than we could finish ... the food, according to ivy was a "m'eh" plus ... i didn't have such a good impression of the patina group since pentimento at the lacma last year ... it just had the feeling of a catered meal - something mass-produced rather than made-to-order ... decent taste, but too simple a presentation ... some of the dishes looked sad with only 2 components ... i would say that, in terms of satisfaction, zucca is only slightly a step above espn zone ... ouch? i'm not sure i'd ask you to waste your money to prove me wrong ... maybe i'm saying all of this because of a grass-is-greener frame of mind ... thank goodness for the good company ... andy
